The Northern Manhattan Climate Justice Coalition, a project of Oxfam Action Corps NYC, is working to make sure that developing countries receive the funding they need to adapt to climate change.
While least responsible for creating the problem, poor countries bear the brunt of increasing hurricanes, droughts, famines…you get the idea. Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is Northern Manhattan’s representative in the US Congress and also happens to be Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, which will help decide the fate of vulnerable communities around the world facing climate change. This means that folks who live or work in Northern Manhattan are in a strategic position to advocate for justice!
Beginning September 10, the Coalition will be meeting the second Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at a location TBA in Washington Heights. (Scroll down on their blog to see their calendar and to stay informed about the details.) They are also on the lookout for a Spanish speaker who can help plan an upcoming screening of a film about how women are impacted by climate change.
